Which subjects for which degree?

The following information is to give you guidance only as things change rapidly in entry requirements and can be very different at each University and/or in each country – it is very important before making any firm choices that you have:

  • Spoken IB Diploma Coordinator

  • University counsellor

  • Talked with your parents

  • Researched thoroughly especially different types of universities and across different countries.

It must be noted you can keep many options open with the breadth of subject choice that you enjoy with the IB Diploma however it may not be possible to keep all options for future career and university pathways open. This can be especially challenging when it comes to looking at different country requirements.

The table below is intended to offer students a general overview of specific entry requirements for the IB Diploma, particularly in relation to Higher Level subjects required to access specific university degree courses. However, please be aware that each university within a country may have its own specific requirements; hence students need to conduct their own additional research. Changes to IB Mathematics courses from 2019 have affected entry into some university degree courses. Individual university websites must be checked for specific details on the new Math's requirements and the table is for general guidelines only.

For many European universities they often have specific IBDP prerequisites in Languages, Humanities/Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Sciences. Interested students must check individual university websites for details carefully and use the specific country links, marketplace pages from their Core lessons that we have provided.

In addition, there are some subjects which are considered to be 'keystone subjects' such as traditional Laboratory Sciences, Mathematics, English Literature, Geography, History and Languages, which some universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge and the most elite US universities may prefer for certain degree courses.

The IB Diploma student is at an obvious advantage as the IB programme allows for a good blend of subjects including ensuring that keystone subjects are part of the mix.
